How Zones Work

Hytale's world is divided into four zones that radiate outward from your starting point. Each zone is harder than the last — and each demands better gear. Rushing ahead without the right equipment is a fast way to die repeatedly. Follow this guide and you'll move through the world at a steady, satisfying pace.

Zone Name Minimum Gear Theme
Zone 1 Emerald Grove Copper → Iron Forests, plains, wetlands
Zone 2 Howling Sands Iron (full set) Desert, arid canyons
Zone 3 Whisperfrost Thorium / Cobalt Frozen tundra, glaciers
Zone 4 Devastated Lands Adamantite / Mithril Scorched, corrupted wasteland

Zone 1 — Emerald Grove

Your starting zone. Don't be fooled by its relative safety — Emerald Grove is packed with resources, secrets, and one of the game's most important biomes. Spend plenty of time here before moving on.

Biomes

Emerald Grove contains six distinct biomes, each with unique resources and enemy types:

Drifting Plains

Open grasslands — perfect for early exploration. Low threat level, great for gathering basic materials and getting your bearings. Start here.

Seedling Woods

Dense forest teeming with skeletons. These mobs drop Linen Scraps — an essential mid-game crafting material. Farm skeletons here early and often.

The Fens

Swampy wetlands with slower movement but unique flora. Worth exploring for herbs and uncommon materials not found elsewhere in Zone 1.

Autumn Forest

A visually striking biome with warm colours and moderate enemies. Good source of wood and reliable hunting grounds for early loot.

Azure Forest ⭐

The only biome in the entire game where Azure Logs spawn. Combined with Kelp at the Arcanist's Workbench, Azure Logs are required to craft Teleporters. Do not leave Zone 1 without stocking up.

Rocky Terrain / Swamps

Tougher terrain, harder enemies. Come prepared with at least Iron gear before exploring these areas.

Don't Skip the Azure Forest

Azure Logs are only found in the Azure Forest within Zone 1. You need them to craft Teleporters — the fastest way to travel once you hit mid-game. Find this biome early and collect a generous supply before advancing to Zone 2.

What to Do in Zone 1

  • Craft Copper gear first, then upgrade to a full Iron set before leaving.
  • Farm skeletons in Seedling Woods for Linen Scraps — you'll need them later.
  • Find and clear the Temple of Gaia — Zone 1's story dungeon — for blueprints and rare materials.
  • Explore the Azure Forest and stock up on Azure Logs before moving on.
  • Gather Kelp from nearby water zones to pair with Azure Logs for Teleporter crafting.

Zone 2 — Howling Sands

A scorching desert zone with arid canyons, relentless sun, and enemies that hit harder than anything in Zone 1. Do not enter without a full Iron gear set.

Iron Gear Required

Zone 2 enemies will overwhelm you in Copper equipment. Make sure you have a full Iron gear set — armour and weapon — before stepping through the zone boundary. Refer to the Items & Crafting guide if you're not there yet.

  • The desert biome introduces Thorium ore deposits — start gathering for your Tier 2 upgrade.
  • Zone 2 dungeons hold Cobalt blueprints and stronger gear components.
  • Watch your health carefully — enemies here deal noticeably more damage than Zone 1 mobs.
  • Begin crafting Thorium gear as soon as you have enough ore — you'll need it for Zone 3.

Zone 3 — Whisperfrost

A frozen tundra where the cold itself is a threat. Zone 3 introduces boss-level encounters and dramatically tougher mob density. Thorium or Cobalt gear is the minimum — anything less and you won't last.

Thorium or Cobalt Required

Zone 3 is a significant difficulty jump. You need at least Thorium or Cobalt gear to have a realistic chance of survival. Cobalt provides better protection and is recommended if you have the materials.

  • Adamantite deposits appear in Zone 3 — start collecting early for your Tier 3 upgrade.
  • Zone 3 dungeons are considerably harder, but reward you with Adamantite blueprints and rare materials.
  • Boss encounters here are no longer optional — they guard key progression items and the path to Zone 4.
  • Build the Arcanist's Workbench if you haven't already — you'll need it to craft Zone 4 gear.

Zone 4 — Devastated Lands

The endgame zone. A scorched, corrupted wasteland filled with the game's hardest enemies and most rewarding loot. You will not survive here without Adamantite or Mithril gear — no exceptions.

Endgame Territory

Zone 4 is built for experienced players with Adamantite or Mithril gear. Mithril is the top tier available in Early Access and provides maximum protection. Don't set foot here without fully upgrading first.

  • Mithril ore — the best material in the game — is found exclusively in Zone 4.
  • The hardest dungeon variants appear here, with the best blueprint and loot pools.
  • Zone 4 enemies hit hard and fast. Make sure your armour is fully upgraded and repaired before each session.
  • This is where Hytale's endgame loop lives — farm Mithril, upgrade your full set, and tackle the toughest dungeons.

Gear Quick Reference

Tier Materials Where to Craft Required For
Tier 1 Copper, Iron Basic Workbench Zone 1 (late), Zone 2 entry
Tier 2 Thorium, Cobalt Advanced Workbench Zone 3 entry
Tier 3 Adamantite, Mithril Arcanist's Workbench Zone 4 entry

Top Progression Tips

  • Complete Zone 1 dungeons before advancing — the blueprints are essential for mid-game crafting.
  • Stock up on Azure Logs in the Azure Forest before you leave Zone 1. You cannot come back for them easily once you're deep in Zone 2.
  • Farm skeletons in Seedling Woods for Linen Scraps — you'll need them in large quantities later.
  • Always repair your gear between zones. A cracked Iron set is weaker than a fresh Copper one.
