Dungeon Guide

Five dungeon types, blueprint rewards, and zone-by-zone strategies — everything you need to clear Hytale's most challenging content.

Last updated: Early Access — Update 6 (May 2026)

Why Dungeons Matter

Dungeons are instanced areas separate from the open world — dedicated combat zones with their own layouts, enemy rosters, and loot pools. They are the primary source of blueprints, which unlock crafting recipes not available at any workbench. If you want the best items in the game, you will need to run dungeons regularly.

Blueprints

Unlock exclusive crafting recipes. Some of the best gear in the game is only accessible through dungeon blueprints.

Rare Loot

Boss enemies and locked chests drop rare materials — including Essence of the Void, required for the Arcanist's Workbench.

XP & Progress

Dungeons are one of the fastest ways to advance your character and unlock higher-tier crafting options.

The Five Dungeon Types

Hytale features five distinct dungeon types, each with different layouts, difficulty, and reward structures.

1. Story Dungeons

Fixed, hand-crafted dungeons that follow the main narrative. Each zone has at least one story dungeon with a unique environment, scripted events, and a named boss at the end. These are the most memorable and rewarding — do them first in every zone.

2. Random Dungeons

Procedurally generated dungeons that appear scattered throughout each zone. Layout, enemy placement, and loot vary every run. Great for farming blueprints and materials without replaying the same fixed routes.

3. Challenge Dungeons

Harder variants with tighter gear checks and more aggressive enemy patterns. The loot pools are richer and include some blueprint tiers you won't find in standard dungeons. Tackle these once you're comfortable with your zone's gear tier.

4. Portal Dungeons

Accessed via Teleporters, which are crafted from Azure Logs and Kelp at the Arcanist's Workbench. Portal Dungeons take you to separate dimensions with unique enemies and loot not found in standard zones.

5. World Dungeons

Seamlessly integrated into the overworld landscape rather than being separate instances. You stumble across them while exploring — abandoned ruins, underground chambers, and hidden cave systems. Keep your eyes open as you travel between zones.

Zone 1: Temple of Gaia

Zone 1 (Emerald Grove)'s story dungeon — your first proper dungeon and a great introduction to what Hytale's dungeon system has to offer.

Type Story Dungeon
Zone Zone 1 — Emerald Grove
Recommended Gear Iron equipment
Enemies Kweebecs, Corrupted Golem (boss)
Rewards Blueprints, crafting materials, rare loot drops

What to Expect

The Temple of Gaia is an overgrown stone structure hidden within the forests of Emerald Grove. Kweebecs — Hytale's small, tribal mob — guard the outer chambers, but the real challenge is the Corrupted Golem boss that waits at the centre. The golem has high health and hits hard, so make sure your Iron gear is fully intact before you enter.

Tips for Clearing It

  • Clear the kweebec outer rooms before engaging the golem — you don't want adds during the boss fight.
  • The golem has a slow, powerful slam attack. Stay mobile and dodge sideways rather than backwards.
  • Search every container in the dungeon — blueprints hide in chests that are easy to miss during combat.
  • If you die, your progress in the dungeon is retained — re-enter and continue from where the enemies respawned.

The Blueprint System

Blueprints are one of the most important progression mechanics in Hytale. They unlock crafting recipes that are not available at a standard workbench.

  • Blueprints drop from dungeon chests and boss enemies — not from regular overworld combat.
  • Once you learn a blueprint, the recipe is permanently unlocked in your crafting menu.
  • Some of the best Tier 3 gear components are only accessible through blueprints found in Zone 3 and Zone 4 dungeons.
  • You can run the same dungeon multiple times — blueprint drops are not guaranteed on the first run.
  • Challenge Dungeons have the highest blueprint drop rates of any dungeon type.

Farming Tip

Don't just run a dungeon once and move on. Dungeon loot resets over time, and blueprint drops are random. If you need a specific recipe, plan to run the same dungeon several times. Challenge Dungeons are the most efficient source if you're geared for them.

Gear Requirements by Zone

Always match your gear to the zone's dungeons before attempting them. See the Items & Crafting guide for full crafting details.

Zone Dungeon Recommended Gear Key Rewards
Zone 1 Temple of Gaia + Random Iron Tier 1–2 Blueprints, crafting mats
Zone 2 Story + Challenge Iron / Thorium Cobalt blueprints, Thorium components
Zone 3 Story + Challenge Thorium / Cobalt Adamantite blueprints, Essence of the Void
Zone 4 All types Adamantite / Mithril Mithril blueprints, endgame rare loot

Dungeon Survival Tips

  • Loot every chest you find — blueprints are easy to miss if you're rushing through combat rooms.
  • Repair your gear before entering a dungeon. Degraded armour reduces your survivability significantly.
  • Clear trash mobs before pulling bosses. Fighting multiple enemies while a boss is active will kill you.
  • Portal Dungeons require a Teleporter — craft it from Azure Logs + Kelp at the Arcanist's Workbench.
