Items & Crafting

Three gear tiers, workbench upgrades, the Arcanist's Workbench, and every key material you need to know about.

Last updated: Early Access — Update 6 (May 2026)

How Crafting Works

Hytale's crafting system is built around three gear tiers, each requiring an upgraded workbench. You start with a basic workbench and progressively unlock more powerful crafting stations as you advance through the zones. Getting the right workbench at the right time is just as important as having the right materials.

Gear Tiers

Each tier represents a significant power jump. Never skip a tier — jumping ahead without the right gear will get you killed in more advanced zones.

Tier 1 — Copper & Iron

Where: Zone 1 (Emerald Grove)
Workbench: Basic Workbench
Notes: Start with Copper gear as soon as you have ore. Upgrade to Iron before entering Zone 2 — a full Iron set is the minimum requirement. Iron also unlocks better tool efficiency for gathering.

Zone 1

Tier 2 — Thorium & Cobalt

Where: Zones 2–3
Workbench: Advanced Workbench
Notes: Thorium ore appears in Zone 2 (Howling Sands). Cobalt is rarer and stronger. You need at least Thorium before entering Zone 3. Cobalt gear is preferred if you have the blueprints.

Zones 2–3

Tier 3 — Adamantite & Mithril

Where: Zones 3–4
Workbench: Arcanist's Workbench
Notes: Adamantite appears in Zone 3. Mithril — the top-tier material in Early Access — is found exclusively in Zone 4. Required to survive the Devastated Lands.

Workbench Upgrades

Each crafting tier requires its own workbench. You need to build and upgrade your workbench before you can craft the corresponding gear tier.

Workbench Crafts Unlocked In
Basic Workbench Tier 1 — Copper & Iron gear, basic tools Zone 1 (from the start)
Advanced Workbench Tier 2 — Thorium & Cobalt gear, mid-game tools Zone 2 (requires Iron components)
Arcanist's Workbench Tier 3 — Adamantite & Mithril gear, Teleporters, special items Zone 2–3 (see recipe below)

Arcanist's Workbench Recipe

The most important crafting station in the game. Required to craft Tier 3 gear and Teleporters.

Material Amount Where to Get It
Fabric Scraps 30 Crafted from Linen Scraps (dropped by skeletons in Seedling Woods)
Essence of the Void 20 Rare drop from dungeon bosses — especially Zone 2–3 challenge dungeons
Thorium Ingots 10 Smelted from Thorium ore, found in Zone 2

Crafting Teleporters

Teleporters are your best tool for fast travel and for accessing Portal Dungeons. They require the Arcanist's Workbench and two specific materials.

Material Amount Source
Azure Logs Required Only from the Azure Forest biome in Zone 1 — collect before leaving Zone 1
Kelp Required Gathered from water zones across Zone 1

Azure Logs Are Zone 1 Exclusive

Azure Logs only appear in the Azure Forest biome within Zone 1. They do not appear in any other zone. If you move to Zone 2 without collecting enough, you'll have to backtrack. Collect a generous supply before advancing.

Key Materials Reference

A quick-reference table for the materials that matter most in early-to-mid game progression.

Material Source Used For
Copper Ore Mining in Zone 1 Tier 1 gear (Copper)
Iron Ore Mining in Zone 1 Tier 1 gear (Iron) — required for Zone 2
Linen Scraps Skeletons in Seedling Woods Crafted into Fabric Scraps — base for Arcanist's Workbench
Fabric Scraps Crafted from Linen Scraps Arcanist's Workbench (30 needed)
Azure Logs Azure Forest (Zone 1 only) Teleporters at Arcanist's Workbench
Kelp Water zones (Zone 1+) Teleporters at Arcanist's Workbench
Thorium Ingots Thorium ore from Zone 2 Tier 2 gear; Arcanist's Workbench (10 needed)
Cobalt Zones 2–3 (rarer) Tier 2 gear (stronger variant)
Essence of the Void Dungeon bosses (rare drop) Arcanist's Workbench (20 needed)
Adamantite Zones 3–4 Tier 3 gear
Mithril Zone 4 exclusively Tier 3 gear (top tier)

Crafting Tips

  • Farm skeletons in Seedling Woods aggressively — Linen Scraps are needed in bulk for the Arcanist's Workbench and can't be skipped.
  • Collect Azure Logs from the Azure Forest before leaving Zone 1. You'll need them for Teleporters and won't find them anywhere else.
  • Essence of the Void only drops from dungeon bosses — run challenge dungeons in Zone 2–3 repeatedly to accumulate 20 of them.
  • Upgrade your workbench as soon as you hit the material threshold. Don't stay on a lower workbench longer than necessary.
  • Some of the best gear recipes only come from dungeon blueprints — the crafting table alone won't get you to peak power.
